Variables: What the Arrows Mean

Overview

Many Human Design charts draw four arrows beside the two planetary columns. Each arrow points left or right. Together they are called the variables. They are a layer under the line: color, then tone. People look them up because the arrows are visible on other charts and the names (digestion, environment, perspective, motivation) sound like instructions.

The free Soul Flow reading does not draw those arrows. The pro view prints each planet as gate.line, for example 13.4. It does not print color, tone, or base, so you cannot read an arrow direction off this chart. This page explains what the four arrows refer to, and where that information stops on the chart you actually have.

What each arrow is about

There are four positions, two on the Design side and two on the Personality side. The Design arrows sit with the red, unconscious column. One of them is about how the body takes things in (often called determination, or digestion). The other is about the kind of environment the body settles in. The Personality arrows sit with the black, conscious column. One is perspective, how the mind looks. The other is motivation, what the mind is oriented toward.

Left and right are the only two directions. Left is the more focused, strategic side of that theme. Right is the more peripheral, receptive side. A chart can be any mix. Four arrows left is one pattern. Four right is another. Three of one and one of the other is ordinary. The direction is not a score, and a left arrow is not a correction of a right arrow.

Why gate and line are not enough

Every activation has layers. The gate is the hexagram. The line is the number after the dot, from 1 to 6, and it is what this chart shows. Under the line sit color, tone, and base. Arrow direction is read from color. Because the free chart stops at the line, two people with the same gate and line can still have different arrow directions, and this chart will not tell you which.

Do not guess. A line number of 1, 2, or 3 is not "left," and 4, 5, or 6 is not "right." That split belongs to color, which is a different number, and it is not on the page. The glossary entry for variables says the same thing in one sentence. If a teacher or another app has given you the four directions, you can use that information. You cannot recover it from the gate.line list here.

What to read on this chart instead

The reading that changes a week is still type, strategy, and authority. Those are printed in full. So are profile, definition, the nine centers, the defined channels, and the active gates. The how to read a chart page walks that order. The incarnation cross, which is shown, uses the Sun and Earth gates, not the arrows. See incarnation crosses for how those four gates are chosen.

The free chart is free and does not ask for an email. It is a complete type, authority, and BodyGraph reading. It is not a variables reading. Treating a missing arrow as a hidden message will send you looking for a diet, a room, or a cognitive style the page never calculated on screen.

Common questions

Does the Soul Flow chart show the four arrows?
No. The pro view lists each planet as gate.line. It does not draw left or right arrows, and it does not print the color, tone, or base that the arrow direction is read from.
What are the four arrows?
Two Design arrows (how the body takes things in, and environment) and two Personality arrows (perspective, and motivation). Each one points left or right. Left is the focused side of that theme. Right is the receptive side.
Can I tell the arrow from my profile or my Sun gate?
No. Profile is two lines. The Sun gate is one of 64 themes. Arrow direction comes from color, under the line. Same gate and same line can still point either way.
Should I ignore variables entirely?
Ignore them on this chart, because they are not displayed. If you already have the four directions from a source that calculates color, they are a deeper layer. They do not replace type, strategy, or authority.
