What Is Human Design?

Overview

Human Design is a system that combines astrology, the I Ching, Kabbalah, and the chakra model into one chart. From your birth date, time, and place it calculates your energy type, how you are designed to make decisions, and where you are open to other people. That is the definition already used on this site. The rest of this page is what that sentence means in practice.

It is not a personality quiz. You do not answer questions about whether you like parties. The chart is calculated. The same birth data always produces the same type. If a result changes, the usual reason is a different birth time, especially near a boundary. The free chart is the calculation. This library is how to read the result.

What the chart is made of

The picture is called a BodyGraph. It has nine centers, evolved from the seven-chakra model: Head, Ajna, Throat, G, Heart, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Spleen, and Root. A colored center is defined. It has a consistent way of operating, and other people feel it coming from you. A white center is undefined. It samples and amplifies the people around you. Open centers are where conditioning is loudest, and also where a person gets wise over time, because they meet that theme in so many forms.

On the centers sit 64 gates, one for each hexagram of the I Ching. The planets at your birth activate some of them. When two gates at the ends of a channel are both on, the channel is defined and the two centers it joins are defined. There are 36 channels. Gates are the detail. Type is the outline. Profile is the two-line costume: a number like 3/5, conscious line then unconscious line.

The five types, and the numbers this site uses

Type comes from which centers are defined and whether a motor reaches the Throat, the center of action and expression. There are five. A Generator has a defined Sacral and no motor-to-Throat connection: 37% of people, strategy to wait and respond, open enveloping aura, satisfaction and frustration. A Manifesting Generator has the Sacral and a motor to the Throat: about a third of people, respond then test then inform, the same aura, satisfaction, with frustration and anger as the not-self pair.

A Projector has no Sacral and no motor to the Throat: 21%, wait for the invitation, focused absorbing aura, success and bitterness. A Manifestor has a motor to the Throat and an open Sacral: 8%, inform before acting, closed repelling aura, peace and anger. A Reflector has all nine centers open: about 1%, wait a lunar cycle of roughly 28 days, resistant sampling aura, surprise and disappointment. Those percentages are the ones on the type pages. The comparison hub puts any two of them side by side.

Strategy and authority do different jobs

Strategy is how your type enters. Respond. Respond, test, inform. Wait for an invitation. Inform, then act. Wait out a Moon. Following it is what the types hub means by less resistance. Ignoring it is what produces the not-self theme: frustration, bitterness, anger, or disappointment. The signature (satisfaction, success, peace, surprise) is the felt sign that the strategy is in use. It is not a prize for being a certain type.

Authority is how you decide, and it is a hierarchy of centers. Emotional authority (defined Solar Plexus) has no truth in the now. You wait out the wave. Sacral authority answers in the gut, in the moment, and only exists for Generators and Manifesting Generators whose Solar Plexus is open. If both centers are defined, the emotional wave still rules. Splenic authority speaks once, quietly. Ego authority asks whether you truly want the thing and have the will for it. Self-Projected authority is heard in your own voice. Outer authority belongs to Reflectors. The authorities hub has all six. Strategy does not replace authority, and authority does not change your type.

What Human Design is not

It is not medicine, and it is not a psychological diagnosis. Nothing on the chart tells you that you are ill, healed, or disordered. It does not rank types. A Reflector is not a failed Generator, and a Manifestor is not a more advanced Projector. The percentages are counts, not scores.

It is not astrology with new names, and it is not the Gene Keys. Astrology and the I Ching are ingredients in the calculation. The output is a BodyGraph with strategy and authority, not a sun-sign horoscope and not a shadow-gift-siddhi contemplation. Those differences have their own pages: Human Design and astrology, and Human Design and Gene Keys.

A sensible order if you are new

Generate the chart with the birth time from a birth record when you have it. Read type and strategy first, then authority, then profile. After that, look at which centers are colored. Gates and channels are the detail, and they make more sense once the outline is familiar. How to read a chart walks that order. The glossary is there when a word is in the way.

The Soul Flow chart is free and does not ask for an email. The app adds 60+ lessons and an AI Soul Coach that answers from your chart. None of that changes the mechanics on this page. If you want the Hebrew explanation of the same system, it is at מה זה עיצוב אנושי.

Common questions

What is Human Design in one sentence?
Human Design combines astrology, the I Ching, Kabbalah, and the chakra model into one chart, calculated from your birth date, time, and place, that shows your type, your strategy, and how you are designed to decide.
How many types are there?
Five: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, and Reflector. On this site's type pages the shares are 37%, about a third, 21%, 8%, and about 1%.
Can my type change?
No. Type is fixed by the birth data. A different result almost always means the birth time was entered differently. Time matters most near a boundary between types, profiles, or defined channels.
Do I need my birth time?
The chart can be generated without it, and the result is approximate. Profile and some center definitions can shift with time. The time on a birth certificate is the reliable input. The calculator does not require an email either way.
